How It Happened
See a need and fill it; this simple idea is the impetus behind many successful business endeavors and Century Ambulance is no exception. As a Captain on Jacksonville Fire Rescue, Herbert S. Sellers III saw the need to provide transportation on a non-emergency basis for those patients whose medical conditions warranted ambulance transportation but that were not 911 emergency rescue calls. Although there were 2 companies in Jacksonville providing non-emergency transport at the time, they required payment up front for all services. Already a successful businessman with his company Century Testing Service (established 1974), Herb had experience in billing insurance companies and felt strongly there was a way to bill Medicare, Medicaid and insurance companies for ambulance transportation to ease the burden on patients and on JFRD. He was right--and with just 2 BLS ambulances and 8 employees, Century Ambulance was born, and the very first Century Ambulance run took place on 5/5/81. And the rest, as they say, is history! Today we have a fleet of 43 ambulances, 9 non-medical transport vehicles and operate in 7 counties. We provide thousands of non-emergency transports and 911 county assist responses as well as being proactive in our disaster responses and evacuations.
We are so very proud of our heritage and our position as the premier private ambulance service in the region. Thank you for supporting and/or being a part of our team!
